Calgary Food Bank just misses world record attempt

The Calgary Food Bank was on a mission to beat a world record this weekend and while they fell short, volunteers still gathered an impressive amount.

Volunteers still managed to gather 489,000 pounds of food for those in need

The Calgary Food Bank was on a mission to beat a world record this weekend and while they fell short, volunteers still gathered an impressive amount.

The goal was to gather 560,000 pounds of non-perishable food, which would have taken the world record back from Durham, N.C. However, they instead gathered 489,000 pounds of food not enough to take back the record.

Calgary volunteers previouslyset the food driverecord in 2008, when they gathered more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Around 7,000 people helped out in the quest to set the world record.

With the Calgary Food Bank headed for a period of high demand and already having seen an increase of 10 per cent in its clients over the summer the effort is continuing to make sure they have enough food to feed the hungry.

The 489,000 pounds of food gathered was an increase of 100,000 from last year's food drive.
