Fire crews investigate two-alarm blaze in Scenic Acres

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the firethat gutted two homes in the northwestand sent one person to hospital.

Around10 a.m. Sunday, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) wascalled to the 9900 block of Scurfield Drive N.W. for reports of a house fire.

CFD said in a release that whenfire crews arrived they were met bya plume of smoke and a large volume of flames coming from two homes. Firefighters on scene immediately called for a second alarm response.

Thehomes had been evacuated before firefightersarrived.

One person was taken to hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported.

Cat rescued

Fire crewswere able to knock down flames on the outside of the homes and began searching the interiors.First responders discovered ahealthy catinside one of the homes and returned it to its owner.

Both homes suffered significant structural damage and CFD said occupants would not be able to return Sunday night.

The siding of a third home was also damaged due to heat from the flames.

Tim Kelter, afriend ofone of the homeowners, said a Good Samaritan knocked on his friend's doorand helped evacuate the home.

"Whoever the fellow was that came by and knocked on the door and woke them up, that guy's pretty much a hero," Kelter said.

The fire is being investigated and fire crews remain on scene working on salvage operations.

The Calgary Fire Department is reminding citizens that functioning smoke alarms can help save lives.
