Calgary man dead after falling through ice while fishing near Vulcan

A Sunday afternoon fishing trip in southern Alberta has left a Calgary man dead after falling through the ice, Vulcan RCMP said Monday in a release.

A Sunday afternoon fishing trip in southern Alberta has left a Calgary man dead after falling through the ice, Vulcan RCMP said Monday in a news release.

At around 1 p.m., RCMP responded to a call at Little Bow Provincial Park, about 40 kilometres southeast of the town of Vulcan.

Two men were ice fishing when one fell through the ice into the lake, police said. While attempting a rescue, the second man also fell in.

A witnesswas able to pull one of the submerged men out of the water with a rope, but could not reach the second man.

First responders rescued that man, a 59-year-old Calgary resident, provided resuscitation efforts and transported him to a local hospitalbut he didn't survive.

The incident is not being criminally investigated, police said.
