ASIRT investigates after man injured in Calgary police arrest processing facility

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man was injured inside the Calgary police arrest processing facility on Wednesday.

According to police, the man was arrested on outstanding warrants and taken around 6:50 p.m. to the downtown facility, where he stayed in a holding cell for approximately two hours.

In a news release, the service said they "observed behaviour that caused them to enter the cell."

"The man was moved to an isolation cell where, once again, officers were required to enter the cell, at which time an altercation occurred and the man sustained what were believed to be minor injuries," according to police.

The man was then taken to hospital and released around 4 a.m. on Thursday.

By 8:30 a.m., according to police, doctors phoned in to the facility to say the man's injuries could be more severe than first believed and asked that he be returned to the hospital.

"He has since been released from police custody but remains in hospital for unrelated reasons," reads the release.

The nature of the man's injuries is not known at this time and city police said no more information would be released by the Calgary Police Service while ASIRT investigates.
