Calgary police chase stolen truck driven 'very recklessly' until crash

The driver of a stolen truck raced "very recklessly," swerving between vehicles and leading police on a high-speed chase for at least 20 minutes in Calgary's northwest this morning before crashing, an eyewitness says.

The driver of a stolen truck racedrecklesslythrough city streets, driving on sidewalks and into oncoming traffic during rush hourin Calgary's northwest this morningbefore being boxed in by officers' vehicles,according to police.

Police took one man intocustody after thecollision onFourthStreetat 16thAvenue after five police cars were damaged, pinning the stolen truck between a parked car and a light standard. The suspect is known to police.

The truck was reported stolen around 5:20 a.m. from the northwest community of RanchlandsonWednesday morning.

MohamadAoudewitnessed about 20 minutes of the chase starting on NinthAvenue.

"He was driving really fast, he was manoeuvring, swerving between vehicles, cops were trying to avoid any collisions but he was going very recklessly," saidAoude, who followed the police cars.

Rush hour rampage

Police located the vehicle using the truck's GPS unit in the truck around 7 a.m. and began following it with a policeHAWCShelicopter.

The driver began speeding and "showed little regard for public safety," police said in a release.

The truck drove on sidewalks, through red lights, in bike lanes and into oncoming traffic during rush hour.

To prevent more damage or injury, police vehicles forced the stolen truck to stop by surrounding it.

Severalwere damaged when the driver rammed the units that surrounded him.

There were no injuries. Charges are pending against the suspect.

Police say there were "some indications" that drugs and alcohol were involved.
