Two brothers accused of murdering a Calgary teenager on a basketball court in the city's southeastmade brief court appearances Monday morning.

A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old each face one count of second-degree murder following the death of 18-year-old Danillo Canales Glenn who was fatally stabbed last Tuesday.

The 16-year-old can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

CBC News has chosen to identify the two accused as brothers rather than name the 18-year-old.

Defence lawyer hired by family

On Monday, senior defence lawyer Alain Hepner appeared for both brothers as they made their first court appearances.

"This is a brand new file, I've just been in touch with the family in the last few days," Hepner told Justice Todd LaRochelle who presided over the youth's appearance.

Hepner indicated he will consider holding a bail hearing.

"At this time the Crown is opposed to release," said prosecutor Katrina Sole Kahler in youth court.

Both cases were put over to Sept.22 as they await an assigned prosecutor.

Victim bear sprayed, stabbed

Last Tuesday, Calgary police were called to a basketball court on Copperstone Road S.E. just before 8 p.m. for reports of an assault with a weapon.

Canales Glenn, who had been stabbed, was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died.

Last week, police said the victim and two friends were at the basketball court when two unknown individuals approached them.

There was a brief argument before police say the victim was attacked with bear spray and stabbed twice.

The suspects fled. Five days later, the two brothers were arrested and charged with murder.
