Calgary police say it's lucky no one was killed Saturday night when multiple vehicles were forced into the ditch along Stoney Trail by a vehicle travelling at high speeds.

"[The driver] was hitting speeds that were definitely reckless," said Det. Shawn Rupchan. "The speeds were in the 140 to 160 [kilometres per hour] range. It's absolutely lucky [no one was killed]."

Rupchan alleged that the driver, who is male, was "severely intoxicated," and began driving on Stoney Trail after police received reports that he had allegedly run into a house and fled the scene.

Driving at high speeds, the man allegedly drove up beside a number of other vehicles, forcing them to manoueuvreoff Stoney Trail.

"He hit seven vehicles, took them right off the road, driving up right beside them. Thankfully, there were only minor injuries," Rupchan said. "He knocked six for sure off the road, the seventh was a semi-truck. That was a little too big for him."

Police units responding to the scene attempted to stop the driver, but were eventually forced to ram him off the road, Rupchan said.

He said an investigation is ongoing, but no more details about the driverwere immediately available.

"Thankfully, it was all taken care of and he's in custody," Rupchan said. "He's been arrested and will be charged with multiple offences."
