Calgary public school board pulls funding for parent council group

Calgary's public school board has pulled its funding for a parent-led advocacy group.

Association of Parent and School Councils vows to keep working as CBE turns to internal group

Calgary's public school board has pulled its funding for a parent-led advocacy group.

The Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils holds meetings to discuss education issues and publicly comments on itemssuch as report cards.

Calgary Board of Education (CBE) trustees voted on Tuesday to stop contributing $3,000 to the group.

President Karen Lloyd says her association has reserve funds and will continue to operate, though its focus might shift.

Without any official ties and therefore who knows what it might decide to do, she said.

The board will now rely on another organization the Council of School Councils to hear from parents.

The unstructured group was set up two years ago by trustees. It has no executive body and is operated by the CBE.

Lloyd said she isn't sure how it will be able to represent parents who disagree with board policy.

I would expect that they would only speak if they were given permission to because they would fall underneath the Calgary Board of Education they are not an independent organization.
