Calgary roads slick as 5 to 10 cm of snow forecast

A fresh layer of snow blanketed Calgary streets Monday morning, prompting warnings from police and the city to drive with extra caution..

"The key is certainly, take your time. The roads are not the greatest at the moment Leave lots of room in between vehicles. Make sure you clean off all your windows," said Duty Insp. Michael Watterston.

"And take your time. It is slippery out there."

City crews spent the morningfocusing on laying a salt and gravel mixture on the major commuter routes, says roads department spokeswoman Jessica Bell.

"But because it is still snowing out and we're expecting to see the snow continue to fall throughout the day there will still be winter conditions on the roads," she said.

Betweenmidnight and 11:30a.m. there were31 accidents on Calgary streets, fourof them involvingminor injuries, police say.

Environment Canada saidCalgary couldsee five to 10 cm of snow on Monday.

Outside Calgary there is a snowfall warning in effect for Kananaskis and surrounding areas. There is currently heavy snowfallin the area.

Environment Canada is predicting 10 cm before it tapers off Tuesday morning.
