Calgary snowboarder found after night in B.C. backcountry

A 37-year-old Calgary man has been located safe and sound after a harrowing night in B.C. backcountry and an exhaustive search-and-rescue mission, Trail RCMP said in a release Sunday.

The man had told his brother to contact police if he didn't check in by 4 p.m. Saturday. The snowboarder had ventured into a backcountry area near the Red Mountain Resort in Rossland.

Trail RCMP launched the local search and rescue team just before 6 p.m. and they continued to look until 11:30 p.m.

Early Sunday the rescue continued but fog prevented use of a helicopter.The man was found around nooncold, but otherwise safe.

RCMP say the man did the right thing by staying in touch with his brother.

"A certain amount of planning and communication with family prior to setting out for his trip was a very good thing," Cpl.Dan Moskaluk said.

"It permitted authorities to be alerted."
