Stolen truck slams into police car in northwest Calgary

Calgary police say they're pretty sure they know the identity of a man who rammed a stolen Dodge pickup truck into a police cruiser on Monday night.

"We have a pretty good idea of who the suspect is because one of the officers involved in this situation had arrested that individual the day before, in that proximity, in a stolen vehicle," said Acting Insp. Darren Cave.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m., after two officers drove through the area near what Cave said was a known "problem address."

Following the truck

Two officers noticed the 2005 black Dodge Ram in the 500 block of 64th AvenueN.W., behind the address in question, according to Cave.

They followed the truckas the driver drove around the north end of the community and onto Hunts Crescent in the nearby community of Huntington Hills, according to a police news release.

The truck then came to an unexpected stop, was thrown into reverse and then driven approximately 30 feet into the police car. Officers had not yet turned on their lights or tried to initiate a traffic stop, according to police.

Getting out of the way

Cave said the the driver of the police car tried to get out of the way, avoiding a front-end collision but still sustaining damage on the side of the cruiser. It was too damaged to move.

"Last night, we were very fortunate that it was just a police car that got damaged, but this could have been way worse," he said.

The truck then fled the scene and was located several blocks away in the 7100 block of Fifth Street N.W. The suspect was not found.

Cave said he believes the truck and the problem address are "directly connected."
