Calgary International Film Festival flick picks

"Ignore at least one of your choices and take a chance on something outside your comfort zone."

That's the way Calgary movie aficionado, Mario Trono, rolls at the Calgary International Film Festival.

With the festival wrapping up this weekend, The Calgary Eyeopener asked Trono to review three very different films.

1) Finders Keepers

A stranger-than-fiction true story about a man in the southern U.S. who lost part of his leg from the knee down and hides it in a BBQ.

That grill goes to auction and is bought by a down-on-his-luck guy who charges money for people to see it, becoming a minor celebrity. Trono says this is one of the best documentaries he has seen in a long time.

2) Sea Fog

Trono says if you're looking for a "Hollywood style" feature film bursting with big action, you should check out this foreign offering. It's entirely set on a South Korean fishing boat led by a captain who has fallen on hard times.

To turn things around, he turns to human trafficking. When transporting 30 Chinese migrants to South Korea, disaster strikes.

3) Prisoner X

For his Canadian pick, Trono recommends this sci-fi thriller. This film explores what would happen if a terrorist could time travel.

"It's a Zero-Dark-Thirty meets X-Files film with elements of TV police procedurals," said Trono.
