31-year-old climber found dead on Crowsnest Mountain

Rescue teams have recovered the body of a climber who died on Crowsnest Mountain lastweekend.

The mountain is about six kilometres north of Coleman in Alberta's Crowsnest Pass.

Police were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a Garminsatellite device's SOS button was activated, indicating the user was injured at an area known as "the chutes."

RCMP said in a release that Crowsnest Pass Fire & Rescue and Pincher Creek Search & Rescue formed a team of 10 people to attempt a ground rescue, with some members hiking to a base point and others climbing further into the rugged terrain.

"Due to the high winds, darkness and the potential for avalanches, the team was forced to turn back," RCMP said.

On Sunday,Kananaskis Country Public Safetywas brought in due to their alpine and long-line rescuecapabilities.

The search team found the 31-year-old solo climber, who had died from his injuries. Police said it's believed the tough terrain and ice, wind and snow were factors in his death.

His body has been transported to a medical examiner's office.

It's the second death on the mountainin recent years. A Czech hiker fell to his death in mid-2019.

Police said the man's name will not be released and no further updates are anticipated.
