High River flood repairs leave contractor out $100K after DRP delay

A contractor who repaired a High River bed and breakfast says he's still waiting for $100,000 in payment from Alberta's Disaster Recovery Program.

Contractor said he received approval over the phone to proceed with home repair project

A contractor who repaired a High River bed and breakfast says he's still waiting for $100,000 in payment from Alberta's Disaster Recovery Program.

The house needed a new foundation and structure after last year's flood, and contractor Jason Carter says he received approval from the government over the phone to go ahead with the project. He says the Disaster Recovery Program paid him $30,000 but then nothing else.

"Not one time did they ever say they had to check the cost," said Carter. "All they said whenever we asked about payments or if the file had been reviewed or any concerns, it was always under review."

Carter says the home owners came up with an additional $12,000 for the cost of the repairs.

He says he had to ask his suppliers and tradespeople to be lenient until he gets the money to catch up on payments. Carter believesthatif he is going through this, other businesses likely are as well.
