Driver turns himself in after fatal hit and run near Lethbridge

A 26-year-old man was killed on Sunday morning while walking along Highway 5. The driver fled the scene.

31-year-old hasn't been charged yet in Sunday's collision

A driver has turned himself in after a truck hit and killed a man on a highway near Lethbridge.

RCMPsay the 31-year-old identified himself to the Coaldale detachment on Monday evening after the owner of the truck he was driving saw a media release and "came forward with the driver."

According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday when a man who was walking along Highway 5 near Township Road 82 and was hit by a truck around 4:50 a.m.

The driver did not remain at the scene.

The pedestrian, a 26-year-old man from the Blood Tribe reserve who was walking with a woman at the time,was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was not injured but was "clearly in shock and upset," according to a news release.

RCMP are not releasing the name of the driver because no charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing.
