Hiker survives 20-metre fall in Kananaskis Country

A hiker is in a Calgary hospital with serious injuries after surviving a 20-metre fall on Saturday.

Rescuers were called in to help the woman, who is in her 30s,just before noon.

"She was hiking in the area, in the backcountry, when she took a tumble approximately 20 metres down," said EMS spokesmanAdam Loria. "She was stable, withnon-life threatening injuries, but the injuries she did sustain were quite serious."

It happened inthe Interlakesarea ofPeter Lougheed Provincial Park, which is about 130 kilometres southwest of Calgary.

Rescuers pulled her out of a remote areausing a sling on a helicopter, and Alberta EMS transported her by ambulance to a spot where STARS air ambulance could safely land.

In a Facebook post, rescuers with the KananaskisCountry Public Safety Section said the woman fell while climbingMt. Indefatigable."The party was well prepared and took good care of her while awaiting rescue."

She is recovering in the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
