Lana Rovang alleged to have faked cancer to collect donations

Calgary police have charged a woman with fraud after she allegedly obtained thousands of dollars by telling coworkers and friends that she had cancer.

Calgary police have charged a local woman with fraud after she allegedly obtained thousands of dollars by telling coworkers and friends that she had cancer.

Police say the 32-year-old woman made several claims she had a fatal heart condition and Stage 4 breast cancer.

Rovang's coworkers and employers held fundraisers for her and investigators believe she obtained about $20,000 in donations.

A member of the public contacted police in July 2013 andcharges were laid after a lengthy investigation.

"When an allegation of fraudulent medical conditions is brought forwardobviously it's quite an intense investigation to obtain medical records," saidConst. Patricia Ariss.

Rovang is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000, one count of fraud under $5,000 and uttering a forged document.

So farinvestigators have identified two alleged victims and are encouraging anyone who may have donated moneyto come forward.

Rovangwas arrested in Kelowna and appeared in a Calgary courtroom on the charges Wednesday.
