Man accused in brutal Beltline beating granted bail

One of the people charged with attempted murder in the beating of a Calgary man in the Beltline area has been granted bail.

One of the people charged with attempted murder in thebeating of a Calgary manin the Beltline area has been granted bail.

Garrett Smith will be under 24-hour house arrestwhen not atwork.

John Herrera was attacked on May 23 whilehe was walking home.A Calgary courtroom heard Thursday he now has no brain function.

Crown prosecutor Ken McCaffrey said the victim's family has some tough decisions ahead of them.

"The prognosis is very poor. He hasn't improved at all since the incident happened," he said. "The family will be making decisions as to how much more medical intervention there will bein orderto artificially keep Mr. Herrera alive."

Hesaid if Herrera succumbs to his injuries, the charges will be upgraded.

Police saythe attack on himwas unprovoked.

Another man and woman are also charged with attempted murder, but did not apply for bail.

Chantelle CampbellandJarod Henrywere in court Thursday, but the case against them has been put over until July 18.
