Mitchell Harkes found guilty of murder in Calgary house party stabbing

Mitchell Harkes has been found guilty of murdering a 20-year-old university student at a Calgary house party in January 2013.

Mitchell Harkes has been found guiltyof murdering a 20-year-old university student ata Calgary house partyin January2013.

Brett Wiesedied from his injuries after beingstabbed multiple times at a home in theBrentwood area in the city's northwest.A second person was also seriously hurt.

The Crown prosecutor argued during the trial thatHarkes had returned to the party armed with a knifeto get revenge after Jazlyn Radke and her twin sister were kicked out earlier in the evening.

Radke, who also brought a knife back to the party,was foundguilty of second-degree murderin May.She was 17 when she was charged, but was sentencedas an adult.

Wiese's family members gatheredat a Calgary courthouse Saturday to hear the verdict.

Harkeswas foundguilty of all sevencharges, includingsecond-degree murder, aggravated assault, attempted murder, assault and breaking and entering.

The second-degree murder convictioncomes withan automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 to 25 years.
