Calgary mother and son charged with obstruction of justice connected to murder charge he already faces

A Calgary man who is already accused of first-degree murder and his mother are each charged with obstruction of justice in connection to the homicide.

A Calgary man who is already accused of first-degree murder and his mother are each charged with obstruction of justice in connection to the homicide.

Mohamad Rafih, 22, was charged last month with first-degree murder in the death of Timothy Albert Voytilla, 44.

Last week, Rafih and his motherRasmya Alhija were jointly charged with obstruction. Both made court appearances on all the charges they face Wednesday.

Rafih is currently being held at the Calgary Remand Centre. That's where he is accused of interfering criminally with his murder case with his mother.

Defence lawyer AlainHepnersecuredAlhija's bail at her first court appearance last Friday. She was at court in person Wednesday morning.

Prosecutor Rajbir Dhillon confirmed to CBC News the new charges are connected to homicide.

Hepner is currently representing both mother and son but indicated to provincial court Judge Sean Dunnigan that was unlikely to be for the long term.

Tuxedo Park homicide

Voytilla wasdropped off at the Peter Lougheed Centreshortly before midnight on April 30.

He arrived with life-threatening injuries and died a short time later while in hospital. Police said at the time that Voytilla was injured in the northeast community of Tuxedo Park.

Alhija and Radih will be back in court in January.

Syed Muhammad Uzair, 22, is also accused in Voytilla's death. He has been charged with manslaughter and accessory to murder after the fact.
