Alcohol, speed were not factors in crash that killed 2 pedestrians: police

Police say the fatal crash happened when a Toyota 4Runner travelling south on Hawkwood Drive turned left onto John Laurie Boulevard as two pedestrians were attempting to cross the major roadway.

Police say alcohol, speed and drugs are not considered factors in a crash that killed two pedestrians in northwest Calgary the day before Christmas.

Shortly before noon on Monday, emergency crews were called to the intersection of John Laurie Boulevard and Hawkwood Drive N.W. for reports of a fatal collision.

Police say two pedestrians were crossing John Laurie Boulevard when a Toyota 4Runner travelling south on Hawkwood Drive madea left turn onto John Laurie.

A 67-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene. A 64-year-old man was rushed to Foothills hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The woman driving the SUV was not hurt.

Police have not released the names of the two pedestrians killed.
