Calgary Police Association VP charged with domestic assault

Calgary Police Association vice-president Mike Baker faces a charge of assault after an off-duty domestic incident last week, CBC News has learned.

Calgary Police Association vice-presidentMike Baker is facing a charge of assault after an off-duty domesticincident lastweek, CBC News has learned.

Officers were called to a home in the city's southeast on May 28.

"A subsequent investigation by the CPS domestic conflict unit has resulted in the member being charged with one count of assault," police said in a release.

Police did not name the 20-year veteran of the force, butthree CBCNews sources confirmed the man facing charges isMike Baker.

Baker was on leave from CPS while in the role of CPA vice president.

"As is the case any time charges are laid against a member of the public, the officer is afforded the right to a fair trial and is being offered the appropriate supports from the service throughout the court process," police said.

Baker, who had been very active on Twitter, deleted his account in the past couple of days.

CPA president Les Kaminskifaced his own set of charges perjury and assault stemming from a 2008arrest. But all charges were dropped as of January.

CBC News has asked the CPA for a comment but the organization has not yet responded.

Baker will make his first court appearance onFriday.
