More details have been released about how a Calgary police officer came to shoot a man during an alleged home invasion last weekend.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), whichis investigating the officer-involved shooting, issued a statement Friday afternoon with more information about what appears to have happened.

On March 23, around 1:30 a.m., Calgary Police Service members were called to a home on the 2700 block of 86th Avenue S.E. The force's acting deputy chief had said they believed the home was the site of a targeted home invasion.

Within 10 minutes of arriving, a uniformed officer shot a man in the driver's seat of a dark, mid-sized SUV. The shot hit his torso, ASIRT now says. The man, 33,remains in hospital in critical, stable condition.

The investigation remains open, and the agency did not respond to a request for further comment.

The officer who fired the gun has not been identified by police and was described only as a six-year member of the force.

In its statement, ASIRT details how a single, uniformed officer arrived on scene ahead of his colleagues. He approached the home on foot while armed with a C8 carbine rifle, ASIRT said.

'Confrontation' with SUV occupants

He saw two men in the SUV and "announced his presence," advising the men that they were under arrest.

"A confrontation occurred between the officer and the men, at which point the officer fired his C8 carbine rfile," ASIRT said. "The vehicle travelled approximately 30 metres further down the road before it came to rest at the side of another residence."

ASIRT believes guns were involved.

On the original 911 call, investigators say dispatchers were told nothing about firearms but heard "background noise that suggested a disturbance" and that a gun or guns were involved.

The Calgary Police Service has said officers later found an injured man inside the home.

They also found a sawed-off Browning shotgun on the road, about 15 metres from where the SUV stopped.

The other person inside the SUV, a 28-years-old man, suffered minor injuries, ASIRT said. He was also arrested.

There has been no word of whetherthe menface charges in the alleged home invasion. Following the shooting, police said they were investigating if other suspects were involved.
