Parent advocacy group to keep working without school board funding

A parents' advocacy group involved with public schools has voted to continue operating despite losing its funding from the public school board.

The Association of Parents and School Councils (CAPSC) holds meetings to discuss education issues and publicly comments on issuessuch as report cards.

Last month, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) voted to stop contributing $3,000 to the decade-old organization.

The CBE also ended the group's stakeholder status with the board.

"Next is moving forward and bringing more membership into CAPSC.Getting a stronger voice. Better communication channels and better funding resources as well, said president Karen Lloyd.

Without funding from the CBE, Lloyd said CAPSC will be truly independent and only accountable to parents.

The CBE will now rely on another organization the Council of School Councils to hear from parents.

That group was set up two years ago by board trustees. It has no executive body and is operated by the board.
