Police crack safe, find 42 kg of cocaine

A safe confiscated during a Calgary drug bust last week turned out to hold 42 kilograms of cocaine, police said Tuesday.

On Jan. 22, police stopped a vehicle in the northwest and found five kilograms of cocaine and $105,000 in cash. A subsequent search of a home turned up another 20 kg of cocaine, $112,000 in cash, three handguns and a rifle.

One man from Calgary and one from Victoria have been charged.

A safe was seized from the home's garage and opened on Monday.

In all, police confiscated 67 kg of cocaine. Calgary policeestimate its street valueat $6.7 million.

"This is now the largest seizure of cocaine in the history of the Calgary Police Service," said the drug unit's Staff Sgt. Monty Sparrow in a release.

In May, Calgary police announced they had confiscated $4 million worth of cocaine after a five-month investigation.
