Police probe highway shooting near Chestermere

Police arrested three people after a flurry of gunshots struck a car travelling on the Trans-Canada Highway near Chestermere Lake, leaving one man dead.

Pirtpal Jhajj, 24, was one of five men in their twenties found in a bullet-ridden vehicle on the eastern edge ofCalgaryat 17th Avenue and 52 Street S.E. at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Jhajjwas pronounced dead at hospital. Two other men are in hospital with gunshot wounds. Theremaining twomen weren't hurt.

RCMPannounced Monday that theyarrestedthreepeople Sunday night whoare in custody in Strathmore, but no charges have been laid.

People living in Chestermere have provided police with some clues, but officers are seeking information from anyone else who may have witnessed the incident, said RCMP spokesman Patrick Webb.

"On this freeway at that time of the morning, 12:30 to 1 a.m., the vehicle left the scene. It was observed to make a U-turn. At that time another vehicle we don't believe it was related had to do some heavy braking and laid on the horn. We would be very interested to speak to that driver."

Webbsaid the men called 911 once they got to Calgary because they realized their injuries were serious and they might not survive without help.
