Calgary police shooting in Stanley Park leads to charges for man with replica antique handgun

A man has been charged and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an officer-involved shooting that took place in Calgary on Sunday.

A man has been charged and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an officer-involved shooting that took place in Calgary on Sunday.

Police responded to reports of a man with a gun in Stanley Park around 3:40 p.m.in the city's southwest.

According to ASIRT, the man began walking away into"the heavily populated park"when officers arrived.

"CPS members confronted the man at which time he produced a handgun, which resulted in a CPS member discharging a service pistol at the man," according to an ASIRT press release.

The man fled into the park and was confronted again. This time he placed the handgun on the ground and surrendered.

Police have charged the 23-year-old with assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and obstruction.

According to ASIRT, the weapon turned out to be a replica antique handgun.

ASIRTisinvestigatingthe circumstances leading to up to the officer opening fire and is asking anyone who was in the park and may have seen the confrontation to contact themat 403-592-4306.
