Isaiah Zoue was found dead in his home on Jan. 30 after police went to the house in the 400 block of Ranchlands Grove N.W. for a check-on-welfare call.

His mother, Fatim Bamba, 28, was taken to hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition. Police say they cannot provide any details about her injuries for privacy reasons.

An autopsy was conducted on the boy, but more tests were required to determine the cause of death, police said.

His death has now been classified as a homicide and Bamba, who was considered a suspect from the outset, has been charged with second-degree murder.

She has so far beenunco-operative with investigators, saidInsp. Don Coleman.

However, other members of the family, including the boy's father, have been co-operative,he said. There are no other suspects.

Coleman saidit hasbeen a difficult case for everyone involved.

"They are especially tragic, not just for investigators but for a community as a whole, especially when we see a victim allegedly murdered by the person that's solely entrusted with their safety and security. It's especially tragic for everybody."

Bamba will appear in court on Sept. 9.

This is Calgary's 17th homicide of 2016.
