Calgary city council passes first reading of shark fin ban

Calgary city council has given first reading to a bylaw to ban shark fins in the city, but two aldermen will do a community consultation on the proposed change and report back to city council in January for final approval.

Calgary city council has given first reading to a bylaw to ban shark fins in the city.

But two aldermen, John Mar and Brian Pincott,will do a community consultation on the proposed bylaw and report back to city council in January for final approval.

The bylaw won't go ahead right away sincesome aldermen want moreconsultation from the community.

The proposed bylaw calls for a ban on the possession, sale, consumption and advertisement of shark fins starting next July.

It also calls for fines of between $300 and $1,000.
