Charges possible following Idle No More protest in Calgary

Calgary Police are investigating whether charges will be laid following an Idle No More protest on Saturday that blocked the 14th Street bridge.

About 75 people marched seven kilometres from Nose Hill Park to the 14th Street bridge where protesters waved signs and chanted while blocking traffic for several hours. Protesters remained on the bridge until about 10:30 p.m. MT Saturday night.

Calgary police issued a press release saying the incident was peacefully resolved and the bridge was open to traffic.

Many of the demonstrators were youths, something organizers said was encouraging.

"We want our children to be healthy. We want them to be educated. We want them to participate in society as equals and this is part of the statement that theyre making today and these young people here are very frustrated and theyre here to demonstrate," said Alvin Manitopyes.

Another protest is planned for Wednesday afternoon.

Saturday's protest in Calgary was one of many held across the country.
