Strathmore homicide: Brenda Walker ID'd as victim, ex-partner charged

RCMP have identified a woman who was found dead in Strathmore early Tuesday morning as 49-year-old Brenda Walker.

RCMP have identified the woman found dead in herStrathmorehome in southern Alberta Tuesday morning as 49-year-old Brenda Walker.

Officers discovered her body at a residence in the 100 block of Sixth Avenue around 1 a.m. MT just minutes after she called 911 for help.

Strathmore resident Glenn Randall, 52, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Staff-Sgt.Kevin Reilly says the woman had ended a common-law relationship with Randall a few weeks ago but RCMPhad no prior indication the victim may have feared for her safety.

"We've checked our records and there's no indication of any prior calls, domestic or otherwise, in regards to either person," he said.

Cause of death not yet released

The cause of her death has not been released.

Karen Pease, the executive director of the WheatlandShelter, would not comment on this case but calls itdisturbing news.

"I've worked in the shelter for almost 22 years," she said. "So it's devastating when we hear this happens anywhere, but its especially concerning when it's our community."

Pease says while the shelter is always busy, staff can help people escape abusive relationships and stay safe.

Randalls first court appearance is set for Jan. 20 in Strathmore.

Strathmore is about 55 kilometres east of Calgary.
