Police responded to calls of a train derailment in downtown Calgary late Thursday night, according to Paul Tewortewith Calgary Police Service.

"We received a call from CP Rail that a cargo train had derailed at the traffic circle at Dartmouth Road by 26th Avenue," Teworte said.

CPS shut down a number of roads in the area as a result of the derailment, and traffic was expected to be diverted throughout the night.

No hazardous materials were on the trains when they derailed, according to police. (Chris Martin/Calgary Police Service)

"We'd ask the public to avoid that area for traffic," Teworte said, adding the public should take alternate routes such as 9th Avenue S.E.

There were no injuries as a result of the derailment, police said.
