Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in northeast Calgary

A young womanwas struck and killed by a vehiclein northeast Calgary early Thursday.

At about 2a.m., a vehicle struck the woman on Fourth Street N.E., between the two entrances to Huntstrom Drive, according a news release from Calgary police.

Police say the woman along with a man may have been skateboarding in the southbound travel lane of Fourth Street.

According to the release, a2005 silver Infiniti M35X, driven by a man in his 20s, was travelling south on Fourth Street when it struck the female pedestrian.

The vehicle briefly left roadway, rotatedand thenstopped beside the road. The car then drove back onto the roadway,pulled into a neighbouring street and stopped, police say.

The woman who was struck was declared dead at the scene. The male pedestrian was not injured.

The driver and passenger in the car were uninjured.

The driver stayed at the scene until first responders arrived, police say.

Police believethe driver's excessive speed and alcohol werefactors in the collision.

Charges are pending.
