A 19-year-old man is dead and a 17-year-old male is in hospital after a shooting in northwest Calgary.

Calgary's 911 centrereceived a flurry of calls Wednesday after neighbours heard gunshots at about 2 p.m. around the intersection of Vandergrift Crescent and Valiant Drive N.W., just off Shaganappi Trail.

Police arrived to find two men who had been shot, sitting inside a red Jeep.

Emergencycrews took the oldest shooting victimto hospital in critical, life-threatening condition where he later died, said paramedics. The 17-year-old is still in hospital in stable condition.

Officers canvassed the area Wednesday evening, knocking on doors and looking for evidence. The investigation included personnel from the homicide, major crimes, organized crime and drug units, said duty Insp. Keith Pollock.

The police helicopter and police dogs were dispatched to the scene, but Pollock said the heavy rain at the time made it difficult for the dogs to pick up many clues.

Police released few details about the incident as a yellow tarp covered the Jeep's driver-side window.

The mid-afternoon shooting alarmed many residents in the area.

"I'm scared of even being out on my balcony or being in front of my window or something because I don't know if anything is going to happen," said Cindy Bainbridge, who lives four doors down fromwhere theJeep was found. "It's getting crazy here. I used to feel safe in Calgary but I don't feel safe here anymore."

At about 6:15 p.m., a CBC News camera capturedpolice taking a young man into custody from the Varsity Acres area, but officers wouldnot disclose if it was related to the fatal shooting.
