Notley's communications director Cheryl Oates said McGrath will serve as a senior adviser and aide to the premier.

"Through the Fort McMurray fire, and other events, we've discovered the premier's office needed more bandwidth," Oates said in an email to CBC News. "We're now redistributing the files among three people rather than two."

Oates said the principal secretary position exists in most other premier's offices in Canada. Former Alberta premiers have also had someone in that role.
