Merwan Saher has been chosen to succeed Fred Dunn as Alberta's new auditor general.

Saher has been the province's assistant auditor general since 1996. An all-party committee of MLAs tasked with finding Dunn's replacement made the recommendation, the government said on Monday.

The committee's choice must be confirmed by the legislative assembly through the passage ofa motion. The appointment is then made by the province's lieutenant governor.
