Dec. 13, 1982: The Tegler Building goes out with a bang

On the final day of its existence, theTegler Building was reduced to a pile of rubble on the corner of 101st Street and 102nd Avenue.

Demolishing the historic building was a spectacle not often seen in the downtown. A crowd of onlookers had gathered for a last glimpse.

Once the tallest building in Edmonton, the seven-storey TeglerBuilding was built by Robert Tegler in 1912. It was two storeystaller than any other building in the city.

It was brought down by 450 explosive charges.A gigantic cloud of dust rolled through the city's centre like a wave on the ocean.

With the building gone, the Bank of Montreal, which purchased the Tegler in 1978, had a place to construct a new branch and corporate office.
