366 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Alberta, 14 additional deaths

On Tuesday, there were 366new cases of COVID-19 reported in Alberta,for a total of 8,652active casesthe lowest total seen since Nov.12.

And while that may suggest an end to health restrictions could be imminent, Dr. Deena Hinshawsays that isn't likely to happen soon.

"I know that many Albertans and impacted businesses are eager to reopen and wishing we would move more quickly," Alberta's chief medical officer of health said at a news conference Tuesday.

"But we must be cautious, recognizing that the health system in all parts of the province remains under strain.

"The rise of new variants in Alberta and around the world also makes it vital that we not move too quickly, which could have dire consequences for our health system and our health."

On Monday, Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced avariant of the COVID-19 virus known for its ease of transmission appears tohave already entered the broader population. One case has beenfound in an individual with no link to international travel.

TheB117variant,first identified in the United Kingdom, is raisingconcerns there may be more cases in the province.

There were 626Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, including 108patients in intensive care units.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw is asking all Albertans to be thoughtful about what they post and share as the province works to combat misinformation about COVID-19

An additional 14 deaths were reported Tuesday. As well,one previously reported death has since been determined not to have been a result of COVID-19,bringing the death toll to1,587.

There were 8,312 tests completed by provincial labs Monday.

To date, 99,814Albertans have received either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines,and about 10,000 of them have now received both required doses.

Here is how the active cases breakdown among health zones acrossthe province:

• Calgary zone: 3,369 cases
• Edmonton zone: 3,027 cases
• North zone: 1,132 cases
• Central zone: 746 cases
• South zone: 362 cases
• Unknown: 16 cases
