Edmonton participates in 32nd Terry Fox Run

Dozens of Edmontonians joined other across Canadaon Sunday to mark the 32nd annual Terry Fox Run.

People met in William Hawrelak Park on Sunday morning to race for hope in a cure for cancer.

In 1980, Terry Fox set out on the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run on an artificial leg, after losing a leg to cancer.

The cancer eventually spread to his lungs and Fox was forced toend his run in Thunder Bay, Ont. He died on June 28, 1981.

However, millions of people have continued Fox's journey in the years following his death, taking part in Terry Fox Runs in 60 countries around the world.

Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel was at the run Sunday morning and spoke about the legacy Fox has left behind.

"When one thinks about his run, you think about Terry Fox and what he contributed," Mandel said.

"I think it's allowed all of us to feel the importance of these kinds of runs, how this kind of investment makes changes to people lives."

Organizers are still tallying up how much money was raisedat this year's fundraiser.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $600 million for cancer research sincethe original Marathon of Hope took place.
