As part of Canada Day celebrations, the new lights on the High Level Bridge were turned on for the first time.

Just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, Edmontonians will be treated to a synchronized red and white light showcase, accompanied by a special performance of the national anthem performed by the Edmonton Symphony.

But not to worry if you miss seeing the light display project leader Dave Mowat said the bridge will now be lit up every night.

This bridge will turn on when it gets dark, so in the winter time it'll probably turn on around 5 o'clock in the afternoon in the summer time it won't turn on until 11 o'clock at night and it'll probably go till one or two in the morning, he said.

Mowat said he hoped the lights would help on dreary commutes especially on winter mornings.

In total, about $2.5 million was raised to install the 60,000 LED lights.
