Homicide detectives investigate shooting that left man 'clinging to life' in hospital

Homicide detectives are investigating a shooting in northwest Edmonton on Saturday night that has left a man "clinging to life" in hospital, police said.

Neighbours say they heard multiple gunshots; police found 31-year-old man 'slumped over' in a vehicle

Homicide detectivesare investigating a shootingin northwest Edmonton on Saturday nightthat has left a man "clinging to life" in hospital, police said.

Officers were called to a weapons complaint at a home in thearea of 129th Avenue and 130th Streetat around 10 p.m, Edmonton Police ServicespokespersonScottPattison said in a media release.

When they arrived, they found a 31-year-old man "slumped over" in his four-door, white Lexus, Pattison said.

The man was identified as Peter Penac andwas taken to hospital with injuries considered to be life-threatening. Police revealed the name of the victim in hopes it will help withthe investigation into the shooting.

Neighbours said they heard between five and seven gunshots.

John Fitzgerald saidhe saw a man in a parked vehicleon 129thStreet, across from Athlone School, when pulled up to his house around the corner Saturday night.

He had just closed his trunk after unloading some bags when the gunshots rang out.

"All of a sudden, I just heard something start popping off and I just kind of dropped my bags andbeelinedit for the bush there in front of the house," Fitzgerald said.

"I got freaked out because it was right close to me. I didn't know if it was shooting at me or what was going on."

Neighbours concerned about safety

Neil Werbickilives on the southwest corner of the intersection. He heard the gunshots from inside his home.

"I ran outside as soon as I heard the gunshots and I seen a car sped off," he said Sunday morning.

"It was like 50 feet from my yard. I'm a little worried," he said. "I live really close to where it happened."

Fitzgerald said he's also concerned for his safety.

"There's been a lot of craziness around this neighbourhood," he said.

Police have no suspects in custody. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.
