Multiple dead in collision on Highway 93 in Jasper National Park

Jasper RCMP responded Tuesday to a "multiple vehicle, multiple fatality collision" on Highway 93 in Jasper National Park.

Highway open again as of Wednesday morning

Jasper RCMP responded Tuesday to a "multiple vehicle, multiple fatality collision" on Highway 93 in Jasper National Park.

In a news release, RCMP said they were called around 6:30 p.m. to the scene on Highway 93,five kilometres south of Sunwapta Falls.

SunwaptaFalls is about 55 kilometres south of Jasper.

RCMP did not provide details on how many people were involved in the collision.

A spokesperson said obtaining further details about the crash was problematic due to limited cell coverage in the area.

Traffic on Highway 93 was being re-routed in both directions as of 8:30 p.m., said RCMP.

Highway93 north was closed from Saskatchewan River Crossing to Athabasca Falls, according to Alberta Transportation's website.

Rob Jeffery, who is vacationing in the Rockies with his family,said at least 100 cars were stuck overnight near SunwaptaFalls. Cars filled parking lots and others were parked along the side of the highway, he said.

Some people slept in tents and others in their cars, he said.

The collision scene had been cleared and all lanes were open by 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, 511 Alberta said.

Jeffery said he drove to Jasper on Wednesday morning and saw no vehicle wreckage, but a short length of the northbound lane was "charred."

A RCMP collision analyst is part of the investigation.

Jasper is about 360 kilometres west of Edmonton.
