New interactive map shows locations of Canada's energy pipelines

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association has launched a new interactive digital map that shows detailed information about transmission pipelines.

The map allows visitors to the websiteto enter an address, postal code, city or province to find the exact location of pipelines and facilities in their area, CEPAsaid. It also provides access to otherinformation that hasn't been previously available.

The map includes details on the age of pipelines, which company operates them, what oil and gas products they transport and who regulates them.

"Energy and environment is something we're all deeply concerned about and the more information that's available the better," said Brenda Kenny, president and CEO ofCEPA.

"For years and years anyone with a pipeline on their land would have been very familiar about where that asset is located, but it's the neighbour's neighbour's neighbour that says, 'I've heard there's a pipeline nearby, but I don't know anything about it.'

"That's what we're responding to."

A second phase of the map, due to be added in December, will include an additional layer of information detailing pipeline incidents.

Kenny said over 80 per cent of incidents are minor in nature with no impact onthe public or the environment.

"Where communities have a deep interest is, 'What's happening in my neighbourhood? What's happening near my waterway? How can I know more about that?' That's what we want to respond to."

Member companies operate 40,233 kmof liquid pipelines and 77,015 kmof natural gas pipelines.

Those pipelines moved approximately 1.2 billion barrels of liquid petroleum products and 5.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas last year, Kenny said.
