Residents concerned after senior struck in west Edmonton crosswalk again

Residents of onewest Edmonton neighbourhood areconcerned for pedestrian safety after two separate elderly women were hit by vehicles whilecrossing the street.

A 70-year-old woman was crossing87thAvenue at169thStreetat about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday when she was hit by a car making a left turn, police say.

The womanremainedin hospital Thursday in critical condition.

Mary Lynch, 83, was killed last year by an ETS vehicle whilewalking across the street at the same marked crossing.

Ever since the first accident, daycare worker ChonaZapantahas been warning people to be careful in the area.

"It's very unsafe," she said. "I've been telling my kids to be ... extra careful walking in these streets."

The City of Edmonton said in a statement that "anytime there is a pedestrian involved in a collision ... we look at what can be done."

A city spokesperson said there has not been any formal complaints filed to the city for the 87th Avenue and 169thStreet crosswalk.

The crosswalk is across fromthe MisericordiaCommunity Hospital and near two high schools. Many crossings in the area are served by crosswalks like the one at87th Avenue and 169thStreet.

Angela Welzof the area's West Meadowlark Community League said a large influx of students, seniors and hospital workers in the area is part of the problem.

"We've always been concerned with all of the intersections coming in to our neighbourhood," Welz said.

She said the community league will bring up both accidents at the next meeting and will decide if further action from the city is required.

Police do not believe speed oralcohol were involved in Wednesday's collision.

Charges are pending against the 47-year-old man driving the car, police said.
