The plane that crashed Monday in northern Alberta hit the ground about 30 metres short of the runway, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Wednesday.

The Beechcraft King Air 100 was flying eight passengers from the Edmonton City Centre Airport to the Kirby Lake airstrip near Conklin.

The plane bounced once and came to rest on the edge of the runway, said the TSB in a news release.

One of the two pilots was killed. Four passengers suffered serious injuries, while five escaped with minor injuries.

Seven of the passengers worked for oil giant BP, while one was a contractor.

Officials have not released any names.

The TSB said Tuesday that weather will be the main focus of the crash investigation.

The TSB completed its field investigation Tuesday afternoon. The wreckage is being sent to Edmonton for further examination if necessary.

The plane, operated by Kenn Borek Air, crashed into the muskeg at about 11:20 a.m. MT, Monday.
