SpiderMable, 6-year-old cancer fighter, frees missing Oiler

A small superhero with a big Twitter following solved her case Monday, and freed a hockey star from a bogus bad guy.

A six-year-old superhero gets her dream day when she fights crime and saves a hockey star from a mysterious bad guy.

A smallsuperherowith a big Twitter following solved her case Monday, and freed a hockey star from a bogus bad guy.

Late Monday afternoon, SpiderMablebested a villain known as Mysterioand saved the day for Oilers captain Andrew Ference.

The caper was all part of an elaborate, city-wide manhunt set up by the The Children's Wish Foundation.

MableTookehas been fighting cancer since being diagnosed two years ago with acutelymphoblasticleukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.

While in treatment, the six-year-old hasbeen reading comic books. Her favourites are the1960s-eraSpider-Man, because he was the closest hero to being human, her mother said.

So when The Children's Wish Foundation came knocking,Mablesaid what she wanted most was to meet her hero, confessing she often imagines herself fighting crime like him.

The six-year-old crime fighter and Spider-Man weresummoned to Edmonton city hall Monday morning by Mayor Don Iveson, in the hopes that they could track down the missing hockey player and capture his kidnapper.

"He is her biggest hero," said Elizabeth LoPresti with The Children's Wish Foundation.

LoPresti said the foundation workedwith city police, the mayor's office, the Oilers, Mable's parents and other organizations across the city for weeks to organize the elaborate caper, which saw Mable search for clues andtake up somesuperhero training.

"She's just the spunkiest, most hilarious child I think I personally have ever met," LoPresti said.

On Monday morning, Sgt. Steve Sharpe with the Edmonton Police Service appeared in a staged morning newscast posted to YouTube. In it, he reported thatFerence had been kidnapped and begged SpiderMable for help.

"If SpiderMable is out there, and you get this message, come down to the mayor's office and be a part of that team and lead us towards safety and getting our captain back," Sharpe pleaded.

With instructions from Edmonton police, Mable suited-up set off afterMysterio.

The battle started atWest Edmonton Mall.While the villain gotaway that time, eventually the clues ledher to the EdmontonValley Zoo where a final showdown with the treacherous villainMysteriotook place.

In the final showdown, SpiderMable was joined by new Oiler phenom Connor McDavid.
