A man who injured a toddler in a drive-by shooting on a central Alberta reserve has had his jail time reduced.

The Alberta Court of Appeal has reduced Christopher Crane's sentence for aggravated assault and other unrelated charges to seven years from nine.

The court ruled the original trial judge made a mistake in calculating the global sentence for four separate convictions.

Asia Saddleback was hit when she was 23 months old and spending time at her grandfather's house on the Samson Cree reserve in April 2008.

The bullet is permanently lodged between her liver and spine.

Crane told a sentencing hearing last year that he was drinking and doing drugs when he fired a shot with a rifle into a house he thought belonged to a rival gang member.
