Niagara police officer tests positive for COVID-19

Niagara police say a frontline officerhas tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first positive case within the service.

Niagara police say a frontline officerhas tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first positive case within the service.

Police are now working with public health to carry out contact tracing. The officer is recovering athome in self-isolation, according to a media release shared Saturday.

The service notes the positive case is the first for both sworn and civilian staff members.

The media release did not identify the officer or say which community they worked in.

In a post on Twitter, chief Bryan MacCullochsaid the service is supporting its member.

"We continue to work with our community partners in the enforcement of emergency orders as we come together as a community to limit the spread of COVID-19," he added in the release.

"Especially with the Thanksgiving weekend upon us, the Niagara Regional Police Service continues to echo the advice of Niagara Region Public Health to stay home if you are sick, limit contact with persons outside of your household, wear a mask if you are unable to physically distance and wash your hands often.
