A 69-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle crash in Waterdown on Thursday, Hamilton police say.

At approximately 11:40 a.m., Hamilton Emergency Services responded to 687 Centre Road for reports of a crash involving a white Ford Econoline van.

In a news release, police said the van left the roadway, went into a ditch and struck a pole. The driver, who is from Hamilton, was found to be in medical distress at the scene and was transported to hospital where he later died.

The Coroner's Office is investigating a possible medical episode prior to the vehicle leaving the roadway.

Speed, driver impairment and distraction have been ruled out, police say.

The Hamilton Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit was activated to assist with this investigation. Centre Road was closed for several hours for the investigation but has since reopened.
