Hamilton school board votes for new north end site

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is going ahead with building a new $32-million secondary school on the Parkview and King George properties near the Pan Am precinct.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is going ahead with building a new $32-million secondary school on the Parkview and King George properties near the Pan Am precinct.

The plan passed by a narrow 6-5 margin at a standing committee meeting Monday night.

The board resorted to this plan B after Hamilton city council abandoned plans for a combined school and recreation complex at the former Scott Park School last week.

According to a staff report, the site is large enough to allow for the construction of a 1,250 student secondary school.

The current Parkview Secondary is a place for students with special needs. It was expected to close in 2016, but staff has recommended it close in June 2014 with relocation of students and programs to Delta that September.

The target opening date of the new school is September 2016.
